Day 1

So my first day "on the job" was interesting to say the least. This is how it went:

I walked in sporting my uniform, a t-shirt and a black pair of Dickie pants and of course my styling Wendy's ball cap. I was greeted by the manager on duty at the time, only after I had to get his attention, and was taken to the back office. Now this was not a "real" manager but a cook with promises of being promoted "within a couple weeks" according to him. the actual shift manager was off to the bank and left the store unattended (this was at 11am). He took me in back and proceed to give me a red t-shirt as I think he thought my black Wendy's shirt wasn't good enough. I told him I have a shirt and he said "here's another one so you don't need to wash one every day". I told him the General Manager stated during my interview that he wanted the men/boys to wear black and the women/girls to wear the red shirts. I personally found this to be odd but just went with it. Of course the manager hopeful making this offering was wearing a red shirt so he may have taken this was harassment so I laid off as this was my firt day and want to save my harassment for another day.

Well from there he told me I was going to work the main front register. I didn't think this was a good idea since i received no training at all and having me be the first encounter for the customer probably wasn't the best decision. But since he was going to be in management in a couple weeks I though he knew best. So I worked the front line for lunch. the manager hopeful was shadowing me so I did receive some support, well so I though. Well around 12 noon right around the peak of the lunch rush the GM, who was there on his day off, told the manager hopeful to "clock out". I was like WTF! I am going to need some sort of support to give Wendy's award winning service, wheres Dave when you need him right? Well much to my surprise this guy stayed "off the clock". He said "he had nothing better do to". This is disturbing on a couple levels; one the legalities of having someone work for free in your business and another that this poor sap had NOTHING better to do than work for FREE at Wendy's. I found myself sort of content as I was 42 and working at Wendy's so I found someone equally as pathetic as me, so I was a bit relieved by the idea of it all.

So lunch came and went without a hitch, let be real I am good. So now on to my first thru period (2-5pm). With my experience in this field I know this is a time of stocking and cleaning, mind you nothing was said to me about this it was something I took on myself. So I proceeded to clean the dining room. However, during my self-directed cleaning of the dining room the shift manager came up to me and told me to get it cleaned up. hmmmm I was already cleaning it up so him telling me this seemed retarded, but hey who am I to judge - its only my first day.

Well as I cleaned and stocked all the employees stood around, this is no exaggeration, talking and texting on their phones. They didn't clean or stock anything. The manager was in the office most the time and when he wasn't he talked with the other employees and then came to me to tell me about some lame ass task I was already in the middle of.

Well I wrapped up my day and went home.
